Marine Restoration in the North Sea
We are developing Europe's first large-scale oyster reef restoration project
We aim to contribute to the urgently needed conservation and restoration of marine biodiversity, habitats and ecosystems in the North Sea.
Because local sourcing, risk mitigation and community engagement are central to our approach to achieving low cost and effective restoration, we will also bolster local economies that have been negatively impacted by the degradation of marine environments including the North Sea’s fishing communities.
By helping to bring to scale a network of partners capable of providing the services required for restoration at scale, we also aim to enable the acceleration of subsequent projects initiated and funded by third parties across the Dutch North Sea and beyond it.
EU NATURE RESTORATION LAW
On November 9, 2023, the European Commission, Parliament and Council in trilogue negotiations agreed on the final text of a new EU Nature Restoration Law that will require each member state to restore 20 percent of its seas by 2030 and then to restore all of its marine ecosystems by 2050. In anticipation of this important legislation, the Dutch government has identified native oyster reef restoration as a critical element of North Sea ecosystem recovery and, furthermore, has identified an area of 1.000 square kilometers for future marine protection and oyster restoration.
